As I near the end of my second week as an Operations Intern at Compass Mining, I’ve had the opportunity to dive into some incredibly valuable experiences that are shaping my understanding of operations, data, and workflow management. Here are three key takeaways that have stood out to me so far:
1. The Power of Data and Metrics
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the crucial role that data plays in making informed decisions. Working with various spreadsheets, I’ve come to appreciate the importance of tracking and analyzing metrics. I’ve been heavily involved in managing data related to mining operations, such as tracking repairs, monitoring performance, and ensuring that everything is running smoothly. This has taught me how effective data management can help identify bottlenecks, improve efficiencies, and drive performance.
For example, I’ve had hands-on experience working with spreadsheets that compile data from multiple sources. I’ve learned how to aggregate, clean, and analyze this data to generate meaningful insights. From tracking repair statuses to monitoring daily operations, this internship has shown me how essential it is to ensure data is accurate and organized to make strategic decisions.
2. Spreadsheets Are More Than Just Tables
Before joining Compass Mining, I thought I had a solid understanding of spreadsheets, but these last two weeks have completely transformed my perspective. Spreadsheets aren’t just for basic data entry; they’re powerful tools for automating tasks, creating visual reports, and keeping operations on track.
I’ve been using formulas, pivot tables, and even Google Sheets functions like IMPORTRANGE to link data across tabs and consolidate information into meaningful reports. Creating charts that track metrics such as repair times, machine performance, and more has not only deepened my understanding of the data but also taught me how to present it in a way that’s actionable for decision-makers. I’ve learned to design spreadsheets that are intuitive, scalable, and dynamic to meet the needs of the operations team.
3. Adaptability and Collaboration Are Key
One of the greatest takeaways from working at Compass Mining is the importance of being adaptable and open to collaboration. The mining industry moves quickly, and our team often has to pivot based on new data or emerging challenges. Working alongside other team members, I’ve learned the value of clear communication, effective teamwork, and being able to think on my feet.
Whether it’s solving a data-related issue, coming up with new ways to track performance, or streamlining a workflow, I’ve found that being flexible and willing to experiment has been crucial. Learning from more experienced colleagues and contributing my ideas in a collaborative environment has made the experience even more enriching.
Final Thoughts
My first two weeks at Compass Mining have been an incredible learning experience. From diving deep into data and metrics to mastering advanced spreadsheet techniques, I’ve gained practical skills that I know will serve me well in the future. What’s even more exciting is that this is just the beginning—there’s so much more to learn and contribute, and I’m eager to see where this journey takes me.
